‘Gaia’ is the Ancient Greek name for the feminine spirit of the Earth. Made from shattered recycled glass and finished in gold leaf, Gaia Bowls symbolise how we might begin to repair our relationship with the natural world.

Gaia bowls are formed painstakingly by hand using shattered sheets of waste glass destined for landfill. Toughened industrial glass is prone to a phenomenon known as spontaneous failure. This occurs when a microscopic inclusion is unwittingly introduced during the manufacturing process. Invisible to the human eye, the inclusion grows pushing the glass beyond tolerance levels causing the sheet of glass to shatter with no warning. I exploit this property in performative actions collecting the glass particles for reuse putting something broken back together.
